Frequently Asked Questions

Q.How do I apply for a course?
A.If you are registered and/or in receipt of a payment from the DSP contact your local ETB Training Centre or your local DSP Office to register and apply for a course.
Q.Is there a fee for the course?
A.Day courses are free to all who are unemployed. Night courses are free to certain categories of DSP clients, please discuss your eligibility with your local DSP/Intreo office or your ETB Training Centre.
Q.When will I be contacted about my course?
A.We will usually contact you about 4 weeks before the course is due to start. You will be invited for an information session on the course to see if it is right for you.
Q.Will I have to take a test or attend an interview to get a place on the course?
A.Some courses have a test to assess your skill level and some courses also have an interview as part of the selection process. The Selection Criteria tab on each course will tell you if there is a test and/or an interview.
Q.What are the hours of training?
A.Full-Time courses in the Training Centre are as follows: (Monday – Thursday 08:30-15:45, Friday 08:30-12:45). Night Courses are from 18:30 to 21:30 for either one or two nights per week depending on the course.
Q.How long are courses?
A.This depends on the level of certification on each course and courses can last from 6 weeks up to 48 weeks. Night courses last from 30 hours up to 90 hours spread over about 10 weeks.
Q.What certification can I get on the course?
A.This depends on your course and the majority of course are certified with QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) and other recognised industry bodies such as Microsoft, Adobe, City & Guilds, CompTIA and ECDL.
Q.When will I receive my Certificate?
A.Certificates will be issued following External Authentication. This may take up to 5 months.
Q.Do I get paid?
A.A training allowance will be paid in accordance with your DSP entitlement for those attending full time day courses and payments are made on a back-week basis.
Q.Do I get a travel allowance?
A.A travel allowance may be paid if you live 5km or more from the training location. This is only a contribution towards the cost of travel. No travel allowance is paid in relation to night courses.
Q.Do I get holidays?
A.While in training, learners are not entitled to holidays. However, you will be entitled to Bank/Public holidays.
